Diesel with 100,000 miles -- too many?

I have never owned a Diesel before, so I'm hoping that folks here can enlighten me.

A MH that we're interested in has just under 100,000 miles. Model year 2004, Freightliner chassis, Cat 7.2 liter, 330 HP engine, with Alison 3000 6-speed.

Mileage seems a little high for roughly 10 years old, but I don't know if I should be concerned about that number of miles behind a Diesel. To what extent should I be concerned?

There's another one, essentially identical, with only 67,000 miles not too much further away. The asking price is $8,000 higher. Should I be looking more to the one with lower miles behind it?

I'm hoping to find a good, solid MH that will last us the better part of 10 years with good care and maintenance. Am I being too optimistic for a MH that's already 10 years old?

Thanks!

  • Most diesels don't get there 1st valve adjustments until 75,000 + miles. 100,000 miles just broke in. check coach suspension, tires, appliances, don't worry about drive train. it should be good to go

  • Take it to a CAT dealer and have them run there magic software program so they can tell you more than you will ever want to know. !00,000 miles is just broke in. Also check with an Allison dealer to see if fluid has been changed per their specs.

Our 02 DSDP has 82,000 miles on it and we plan to keep it till we die or can not drive anymore.

I would no spend $8000 for that 67,000mile one unless that rig fit my fancy more than the 100,000 mile one. Or should I say my wife's fancy

Also if it has only one fuel filter and no primer pump I would add the primer pump and a second fuel filter. and yes we added this to ours

  • From reading on this forum you will find that very very few RV's die because of the engine being worn out. Most engines, gas or diesel, will long outlast the coach. I would be more concerned about the condition of the coach systems, furniture, and appliances than I would about the drive train.
  • That engine, properly maintained, will still be running long after the coach crumbles. Laboratory tests and engine disassembly analyses indicate that the Cat C7 engine has a B50 life of 450,000 to 500,000 miles. After you hit that mark, you can rebuilt it and start off new again.
  • Not too many miles at all. MAKE SUE it has been serviced properly with the right stuff. Oil. tires, roof sealer..etc...etc.

Spend that $8000 on fuel for trips!
