dinghy towing odometer

There are 3 ways the odometer works depending on the car.

I have never seen, but did read, of a car where the speedometer was driven off a cable attached to the left front tire (not powered)... Popular Mechanics. back in the late 1960's A story series they published called Gus Wilson's Model Garage.. now as I said I have never seen this.

Most cars and trucks it is driven off the transmission output shaft. Older cars it's a cable drive, which means it's all gears and cables, and if the shaft is turning it's counting the miles.

modern cars it's an electronic linkage and if the ignition is off, it's not working.

I would think that anyone in this category would have a serious fight on their hands. In this day and age of the customer having to prove everything, I can see most companies saying that you have to prove that those miles were racked up towing, or else you'll be footing the bill.

Same answer here. The Honda CRV (mine was a 99) and 2007 Ford Edge did not show the miles towed.

My Manx dune buggy shows the mileage while towing though, but who really cares with a 1967 that the speedometer has rolled over several times by now. Who knows how many miles are on the engine or transmission?

There are companies that made dsiconnects for cable type speedometers, that disconnect the speedometer while towing.

There is also a couple of companies that have automatic transmission pumps, that turn on and use power from the RV to run that pump while towing.

my 2002 CRV does not register miles when being towed but you should keep a record of miles towed and add those miles to the driven miles to determine when to change the tranny and differential fluid. for example if your tranny fluid needs to be changed at 40,000 miles and you towed for 20,000 miles and drove for 20,000 miles, it would be time to change the fluid.
