Direct Tv... portable antenna question

Our Kingdome (08) doesn't offer the best reception. I realize the Direct TV solution is a travler or a big HD tripod dish. Does any of the portable dishes offer better resolution? I realize they won't be HD... but they are easy and automatic - and would solve possible "tree" issues as well.
  • The portables are smaller dishes and the reception is not as good as a larger dish. However I always got good reception in CA with a 18" dish and perhaps your dome is not as good.
  • We have just started using a Winegard CarryOut G2. I'd say the video quality is "acceptable." The same unit is capable of receiving HD on Dish Network, if we ever switch, so we're happy with it.

In the southern states you do not need the large tripod dish to get Direct HD. A 18x20 oval dish with a SL3 lnb on a small tripod will get you HD. Easy to set up as you set the tilt and peak sat 101.
  • Kris, I am assuming you know your KingDome is NOT HD capable...so if you're trying to get good reception with that it's not going to happen. We are satisfied with SD and are happy with the clarity of the picture. That said, we also carry the 18" round for those situations where it's needed. I ran a separate cable to the wet bay into the overhead cabinet into a 4X4 multiplex switch. From there I sent the signal to two A/B switches and on to the two TVs. A = Kingdome and B = outside dish. This makes it easy to switch between the two. I have pictures somewhere. If you need/want them, I'll find them. We've had good reception with the 18" dish all through the country. I disassemble it when not in use and it takes up very little space...Dennis
