  • Any of the dome style antennas work very well. The only restriction is that you cannot get any of the DirecTV HD programming.
If you want HD as well then you must use a home style antenna mounted on a tripod.

OP, if you are looking for a tripod mounted dish for Direct HD do a search for SL3 by me... I'm on my phone and hard to link to an answer where you DO NOT need the big slimline dish and big tripod. If you were in northern states this smaller dish would not have enough signal strength to work well.

This dish will go on a small tripod and is much smaller/easier to store. A Sl3 LNB will bolt right on and this dish has the tilt you need to get 99/101/103. I have only been using this dish for 5-6 years to get HD.

SL3 less than $16 on Ebay..
  • 150 dollar trod and open faced oval dish most of the time. When possible I use my roof mounted Winegard Travler SK-SWM.
  • Winegard Traveler mounted on roof will get HD

    Sorry you asked for portable!!!!!!
  • There are no carryout portable domes that get HD.

I used a surveyors type tripod for years similar to this one.

    clicky

If you switch to DISH (I did) then you can get a Winegard Pathway which WILL get HD.
  • switch to dish net;; better company ;;all HD ;;nice light weight portable
and self aligning; no external power required(powered by receiver)
  • As said, the dome style automatic dishes will only receive DTV SD signals. Also, not all domes will work with DTV since some are specific to a specific DISH receiver series, such as the Tailgater, Pathway X2, etc., that only work with the DISH VIP/Wally receivers.
