Unless you have a large flat-screen TV, the difference between "std" and "HD" is nothing. IMO.Rooftop dishes are nice...but useless if you're under a tree. And $$$.
Of course, everyone's needs (or wants, really) are different. I am not a full timer...but I do snowbird. Like others, I simply bring my (non HD) DirecTV box out of the bedroom and into the RV. It gets hooked up to my passive switchbox and I simply use the bottom dollar dish, tripod,compass and strength meter and go from there. If I need the networks...put up my "bat-wing", push the Antenna button on the switch box, and there I am! Going back to Satellite...push that button. Done.
As far as DirecTV goes, tell them nothing and just pay your bill on time. Never a problem.
