There is really no difference between setting up an "old" SD unit and a "new" HD unit for the reception of SD programming only. Anytime "any" receiver has not been connected to the satellite it will need to be reactivated. This has nothing to do with SD or HD receivers.
Only the H25 and higher model DTV receivers require special hardware but they all required being setup correctly for the attached antenna.
