Do you carry a spare tire?

I have always carried one in my DP. Had a blow out years ago and even with Good Sam the replacement tire that didn't match cost right at $600.....could have bought it at home for 1/2 that. So since then I have a mounted spare in the basement.

Guess you’ve never had a tire shop laugh when you ask if they had your size tire... I had the last laugh when I rolled the unmounted spare tire off the roof of the motorhome. Back on the road in less than 30 minutes.

I,d carry just the tire, without anything your at there mercy. and it ain,t cheap. say you blew a tire saterday afternoon ,you might wait till monday to get a tire. on the side of the road in 98deg heat.

Yes I have had a spare for the last 15 years of travel. I also carry sockets and breaker bars to remove and replace the tire. Having said that I had two incidences where I thought I would have had to change tires, one was in Alaska when I hit a pot hole and bent both rims on the MH and tow car. I straighten the rims with a hammer and the tires held air. The second was a flat tire crossing the border from Canada. I was able to fix it with a plug kit. I also carry two fire extinguishers but have never had to use them either.

I just bought a 2004 Winnebago Sightseer and it has a spare tire but it in poor condition. I plan replacing the tire with a better one.

22.5 Mitchlins are over 400 dollars each. Plus a rim (I do not even want to THINK about it) and they are HEAVY and I dont' have the Cargo Capacity.
Plus the spare ages faster than the service tires due to not Rolling Rolling Rollidn down the highway. SO NO. I go with roadside.
That said.. all new (6) Toyo's 2388 and change.. all paid for. go on Tuesday next week.

I have to go the Roadside Assistance way. At my age and my Lumbar disability I can't handle a 295/80 r 22.5. That's a 40" tire (diameter)! I don't even have the Super tools to take on a tire change. I watched them change my tires last month, they used a 12K lbs hydraulic Jack...Now where am I going to find one of those at a goooood price? The guy was about 6 ft tall and just to place the Jack his whole body disappeared under the rig. Now for the front tires it may get a lil easier, but with my back it's just a risk and challenge I don't want to take on. Plus we're retired, we got time...we'll get there when we get there. I drive my rig at 55-60 mph anyway, so time is not of the essence with us. I see TT and 5ers passing me up at 70mph all the time, swaying and oscillating all over the road, it's scary. Then the other class A's pass me up too. To each their own, We're retired and not in a hurry. LOL, life's not that serious anymore. If I had to get from point A to Point B in a certain time frame I Definitely would not have gotten an RV.

We prefer to travel the back roads of America and are sometimes quite far away from a facility that can change a tire, especially when out West. For this reason we always carried an unmounted spare tire that matched the other tires on the coach. Naturally I carry ERS but if it is going to be a long time for them to respond, I also carry the tools necessary to change my own tire. I do have 19.5 tires and while changing a tire I never have to lift the entire weight of the tire. From experience, I can mount a new tire in about 45 minutes, or probably twice the time an experienced roadside mechanic can do it. Not the most fun, but then neither is sitting at the side of the road waiting all day waiting on some service mechanic to show up with a mismatched overpriced new tire, or a mismatched overpriced used tire that MAY get me to a tire store.
If you always travel close to large metropolitan areas, that have lots of tire stores and service facilities, and if your specific tires are readily available, and if you never get a flat tire during a Holiday period, and if you only get flat tires in areas where you can pull off in to a safe parking lot, then you may not have any need to carry a spare.

We carry an unmounted spare for our Class A DP. It's the reason we bought the toad we did. . . need 39 inches in the back end to carry the tire. Few toads can qualify.

The only time we needed one we took a nail in a relatively new tire. The road service had trouble locating a service who would replace the tire for less than outrageous prices. So after sitting for 6 hours, we finally got someone to come and put on a used tire. He wanted to take our tire since it was ruined. We said no thank you. Drove 22 miles afterwards and spent the night in a tire shop lot. In the morning, they removed and threw away the tire the service had put on. It had a sidewall repair. . .bad news. . . They plugged and patched our tire, put it back on and it ran for 40,000 more miles.

We always carry a spare now so we are not at the mercy of the tire service guys who will charge you any price because you are up the crick without a paddle.
