Dogs and ticks while traveling

We are traveling to Missouri in May, taking our old dog with us. Has anyone had a problem with ticks and if so what do you use. Also we don't have ticks or mesquites in our area. Any suggestions on what to use for both insects on people and dog?
  • There's a different type than nexgaurd that is just one dose every 3 months. Cheaper as well that way but a brand name product.

Ticks are terrible here in eastern Iowa...took our pup out last fall and riding home in wife's lap she took off 6 ticks...unreal and makes you look around your truck a million times. She didn't notice until halfway home.
  • We inspect or dogs when in tick area and take them to a vet to be removed. We refuse to use any type of poisons on our dogs.
  • I used NexGard chewables monthly for fleas and ticks. Get from the vet and costs less than Frontline (at least from my vet). NexGard is not a repellant but will kill fleas and ticks that bite. We camp at least every other weekend all summer and the dog comes along on every trip. Plus the dog enjoys the water which helps.

Mosquitos can be a problem concerning heart worm. Repellants are tricky since a dog will lick it off. Best to use a heart worm monthly preventative rather than a repellant.
  • Your best bet is to get meds from your vet for your dogs. they will be comfortable and you will to because you will not have your rv infested with fleas and ticks. Ours is once a month chewable as well.
  • We use NexGard, which is a once a month pill. With our long haired Great Pyrenees, fleas and ticks can be a problem. We have never had her pick up any ticks or fleas no matter where we have traveled with her in the East or West.
