Domectic refrigerator operation

Like others, we plug the van in the day before departure and set the fridge on 110 and it cools overnight. (If it's hot outside, we also run the A/C to cool down the van.) Next day, fill it up with frozen and already-cold food. Stays cold enough after that on any setting.

Driving down the road, we run it on 12 volt. When we stop for a few hours of sightseeing or stay in campgrounds without electric, we switch to propane.

After a month in the desert Southwest when the propane option wasn't working ...and we had to use a cooler and mess with melting ice...I love the propane 3-way. Even if we had solar and extra battery power, I'd be glad to have it available.

Your engine does not provide 110 power as you're driving but an inverter will.

It is not unsafe to drive with the propane cooling the fridge which it will do so much better than 12 volt. It is VERY dangerous to fill the gas tank with an open flame on.

The wife and I have big fights over the fridge.

On the night before going out, I plug the fridge into 110 house current. I load up the freezer with bottled water and turn on the small fan. The next morning everything is cold or frozen. When I run the rv, I turn to 12 volt. (She wants me to run on propane because everybody else does it. I think it is to dangerous.)

When we get to Walmarts, I leave it on 12 volt, and move some of the frozen bottles to the fridge. (She wants me to run it on propane. I do not want to run propane while sleeping because I can not hear the alarms because of a hearing problem.)

I have found that 12 volt holds the cold until you open the door. For that reason I carry a small L. L. Bean cooler which seems to hold the cold better than the fridge. I carry daily drinks in the cooler. (She thinks the fridge is a piece of "turd" and we ought to get rid of it.)

So ends the story,

One question. While I am driving down the road, the generator of the engine is running and charging up the batteries. I believe the clock is on the microwave. Does this mean that when I am driving down the highway and put the fridge on 110, that it will run on 110?

Ought to check it out.

most professional like RV Doctor do not recommend running the frig while driving down the road. I use reusable ice packs for traveling but if you decide that running the frig on the road is OK for you, just turn every thing off when buying gas.

Give it overnight.

If you've got a wireless thermometer put it inside so you don't have to open the door to check how cold it is.

how long should it take to cool down on 110 V

No, the electric mode (both 110v AC and 12v DC if you have it) consist of a heating element that takes the place of the LP flame.

The first indication of cooling will be in the freezer section. It's always seemed to me that until the freezer reaches it's optimum temp, you won't see much cooling in the reefer section.

no reason just being a little cautious this is the first time I used it

I shut down the propane until I figure out if my water heater is leaking propane which I will work on tomorrow


I think I will run power to it and try your idea of running it on electric first see if that helps

I just assumed the electric part was a compressor of some type and the absorbtion part was a separate system
