Dometic fridge question

Have a new Dometic fridge. Motorhome is in storage. We are about to leave on trip (couple of days) so went out and: hit button to take batteries out of store, turned on fridge, lights came on and it chose gas (LP) to run. So far so good.

Did a few other things and then went to leave: hit the button to put batteries in store position, lights went out on fridge.

Question: Is the fridge still cooling as it is running on LP and just the lights went out as no electric???
  • NO - fridge requires 12volts for the "brain" to function... control module, etc.
  • Nope....

12V is used for circuit board, control panel(s), opens/holds open the gas valve and is also needed when using 120V AC operation.

AND fridge when in operation needs t be leveled or you will be posting later on about lack of cooling issues cause fridge died from off-level operations
  • Okay, get the electric issue and thanks for the help.

Now another question: Had RV parked by the house for 14 years. Was not quite level but fridge was never a problem. Would run it for a day or two prior to trip.

Finally needed new fridge in April (gee, almost 15 years old on previous fridge). Due to unexpected health issue just now getting to use the RV this year. Anyway RV is now in storage lot but will be brining it to the house to clean-up and load-up for trip. If new fridge runs for three or four hours not perfectly level (about a bubble or bubble and half off) will it be okay???

If you have leveling jacks just deploy them, or if you don't, a couple pieces of 2x10 to level it will work.

I am overly cautious about the fridge being level

    YMMV

Will it be OK. Probably. But, Refer out of level is a cumulative process over the years. ALL those times you ran off level (out of spec off level) for a few hours or even days, you do NOT notice any problem and you think, I guess level is not that important. But, as I stated, ALL those times short and long the blockage starts out very small and slowly accumulates until one day the refer just does not cool as well as it once did. You just think, well it just went bad, NO, they do NOT just go bad. They will run for years and years with no problems as long as you do not run off level for even a few hours. Doug
  • The cooling portion of the fridge is the same now as it was 15 years ago. If the old one worked OK, so should the new one
  • I have run a frig off level a bit with no problem. Take off outside door panel to frig. Look at tubes in back, and if they all appear to slope down hill, you should be OK. If any are level or lose to level they you need to level RV.
  • 'Reasonably Level' is the recommendation by Dometic. Norcold lists amount of degrees side to side & front to rear.

Reasonably Level is easier to figure.

Do you feel it is out of level when standing, sitting, walking etc.
If YOU feel off level it IS.

And NO.the cooling portion of OLD is NOT the same today. Same process, same concept but tubing is much thinner in cooling unit now then back when.

Off level operation even for 20 minutes can cause damage. Damage which is permanent AND accumulative. Crystals form, attach to inside of tubing, build up and block gravity flow of coolant solution....DEATH
