Door closer / keeper

The door on our new Winnebago Sigtseer is located adajacent to a slide. With the slide in, the door actually opens flat against it.
While someone at the dealer was preping our new unit, they managed to open the slide WITH THE DOOR PARTIALLY OPEN. Needless to say the door trim saved the door but took the brunt of it.

With the slide out and someone not carefully opening the door, the door can swing out and bump into the OPEN slide ... again, the door trim taking the impact.

Does anyone have a similar arrangement? How solved? I've been looking for an RV pneumatic door closer like the ones used on residential screen doors to limit the distance the door will open but haven't found one.
  • You could buy lite weight coated cable at Home Depot (1/16th"), loop both ends and secure to door so it limits how far it opens.

You could also design a nice looking rubber stop that mounts to the door so that the rubber hits the slide. If there is room, you could mount the rubber stop on the slide. I would stay away from the shock. It will be very difficult to make a piston stop exactly where you want it to.
  • I would probably look to buy a gas shock, rather than a generic screen door damper/closer. A gas shock will be smaller and look more modern. I would suggest mounting it at the bottom in the step well, as close to the floor as possible, just for looks. You will probably need to buy a short piece of angle iron to mount if to the side of the steps, so it can pivot the right direction.
  • Oue Airstream Land Yatch used a pneumatic strut for just that purpose.
  • There are actually two components of the typical stick house screen door closers.
There is the pneumatic closer that brings the door closed gently and is usually mounted at the bottom of the door and the Shock Spring that does the limiting of the opening of the door and is usually mounted at the top of the door.
Of course the pneumatic door closer does the same thing but the Spring is a much simpler device. Should be available at your local hardware or home center.
