DP for Fulltimers with 2 young kids?

We are embarking on a tour of the US for about 18 months across the entire US. We currently own a Jayco Redhawk 31XL and a Jayco Precept 35UP. We are discussing moving to a DP for more space and the added amenities like a washer and dryer.

But with some many options in the DP range we are stuck analyzing all the different options. Bunks are typically part of our plan because of two elementary kids.

We are looking for the most reliable coach for the money. Our thoughts are Newmar, Tiffin, etc. Budget is up to $250k.

Any reco's?

Thank you in advance!
  • The Tiffin 38QBA Bunk house is nice. you should be able to find one used well within your price range, new might be a bit more. There are a number of rigs like this out there.

Find a floor plan you like and go for it.
X-2, Check out all the DP's and find the floor plan that suits your needs.
  • The combo washer dryer works ok for two people but with kid stuff you definitely want a floor plan with stacked washer, dryer units. Two toilets would be a plus with four people all the time too.

    Enjoy the trip!! :) :)
  • We've done the DP and the Fifth wheel thing. I don't think you can get a Class A that even comes close to what the 5th wheels offer with the different floor plans.

If you do go the Newmar route you can convert some of the rear baths into a bedroom for the kids. We were never a fan of just throwing bunks just off the living room. Such a half baked solution due to having no other area to use.
  • There are many options available. You do not mention the ages of your children. I will tell you our experience and our reasons. We started out about 11 years ago looking at towables. We did not look at 5th wheels as I have o regular use for a 3500 series truck. I owned a Suburban that could tow maybe 8500 pounds comfortably. I wanted a couple thing. I wanted to be able to stand up, I am a bit over 6-1 and many trailers had me walking around the overhead lights. We wanted to be able to have our daughter go to bead while we sat up and not have to move her later. This meant two bedrooms. Trailers rapidly grew in weight to sizes I was not happy with. We found a Winnebago Sunstar 33K Bunkhouse. It is an ENTRY level unit, it was noisy but it actually worked out well for us. Two bunks, each with a DVD player, a queen for mom and dad. We towed our Jeep. Traded this in for a second Winnie, Sunova 35J, nicer finish, quieter. We kept this for about 7-8 years. Traded in this past summer for our third Bunkhouse rig, a Tiffin 38QBA. Stacked Washer Dryer, Bunks that can convert to a hanging locker, Much storage, Multiple TVs, 4 door frig, Diesel, Air Ride and brakes.

Consider the time you spend doing each activity as you travel, Sleep? 6-9 hours. Bathroom activity, 1 hour total? Actual driving? maybe 8 hours a day but how many days in between parked? Private space? Bunks give the kids a 'personal space' all their own. You have a room to yourself as well. We opted for the largest 'LIVING ROOM' we could, bedrooms and bathrooms aren't where you spend your time. You need/want comfortable seating in the main can=bin, you want easy viewing angles to the TVs, a place to sit and eat. Here I'd probably opt for a table and chairs if it had been available. We have a dinette and none of us are small so I have a collapsible table that I set up for dinner. So far I have not seen an RV with a big enough table. Snack tables address this as well. Do try to spend an extended time just hanging in a rig before you buy. A couple hours is not too long.

The nice part of a DP is that you are all together while driving, but you can stretch out, sleep, watch TV while underway. You can stop in a rest area in the pouring rain, use the facilities, cook, eat, sleep and get underway again without going outside. When you get where you are going you can unhook your car and drive a smaller easily manageable vehicle around your destination, you aren't stuck in a SuperCrewCab 28 foot long monster! Parking on main street or in a roadside attraction is simple.
  • They are 9 and 6. We have a bunk house now on our Precept 35UP and they love it. As I research I am starting to understand what everyone says about "finding your floor plan."

I just spent 8 hours driving today in 20 mph winds and let me tell you it was not easy! So the ride-ability of the coach is going to be key for me!
Thank you everybody for your comments and experiences. It really helps!
  • Newmar & Tiffin are both solid choices but there are others also. Are you looking at used or new only? What length are you wanting? Lastly, congrats on being able to hit the road with such a young family.
  • I believe Integra makes a bunkhouse model. You might what to look at that.
