DTV antennas, what are the choices?

We've used a Track-in-motion antenna for ten years, think it is a KVH L2 model. Never wanted to used it while moving. I'm tired of the long setup procedure...as it finds a dozen satellites before finding the correct one (101A). Sometimes it takes an hour and has to be reset manually after every satellite.

I'm impressed with the new (Dish only) "Tailgater" for less than $400.I also see more Rv'ers with non-dome units on their rigs. I'd like one I can turn on and forget it.

What are the best alternatives for Direct TV users?

We had a in-motion SD dish that did the job for us and was installed by the prior owner. Never used it when driving.

Then I discovered that in some areas of the country there are no SD channels - only HD which can viewed on a SD TV if desired. And the MH TV was HD.

So we gave away the in-motion and replaced it with a RF Mogul. It takes 2+ minutes to locate the satellites and worked great in Alaska which is a long way from the sats.

But it's SWM only and requires a SWM receiver. Our HR24 was both dual LNB and SWM capable. Just got a HR44 (SWM only) and it is significantly better.

However you'll pay more for the RF Mogul.

You got Directv HD in Alaska on a rooftop sat dish? I do like the SWM.
  • I love my WinnegaardTraveler. Worth every penny.. Press a botton and your done..

  • The Trav'ler type antenna (open face) is the only antenna that will allow you to receive the DirecTV HD programming. If you are not concerned about HD then any of the newer roof mounted dome or portable unit do an excellent job or receiving the DirecTV signal. For a low cost portable antenna I like the Winegard Anser but it's pretty big. That's because it has a big antenna as well and can get you a very strong signal strength. This is semi-automatic and requires you to do a couple minutes worth of work to get locked on. There is a new "tiny" fully automatic antenna on the horizon and I would suggest that you wait for it if you want fully automatic and something you can store away and set out when you are at your site.
You can find the info here. http://www.winegard.com/carryout/ It's only 14.3" wide and 13.5" high.
  • RF Mogul is also offering auto seek sat dishes similar to the Traveler.
  • WinnegaardTraveler. A little pricey perhaps but for a full Directv user who wants HD and uses DVR and would like to watch one channel and record another it is perfect. Push a button and it finds the sats needed. Mine has peaked to 99 frequently and the best at home has been 95. Now for this great system with install you will be paying close to 2 grand but for me it was worth it.
