Duo therm 620515 penguin AC

We have a 2001 HR Imperial with the duo therm 620515.321 Penguin air conditioner. Turned the front ac on to cool through the night. This morning it started blowing hot air, no more cooling. Rear ac seems to be working fine.

Last week we started noticing bits of a dry gunk getting blown out of the vents when we first start it up. We figured that since we had been in high humidity/high heat areas for the last 6 months it was some sort of build up of dust combined with moisture. We are now in a dry climate. Air conditioners have pretty much been run constantly for the last three months.

Turned ac off a couple of hours ago. Just tried it again, it is blowing room temp air when thermostat is set at 65.

We have kept filters clean, blown out under the shroud outside. All inside vents are open. Other than that we haven't done anything else.

We purchased this motor home two years ago. No records of service or maintenance.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
  • When you cut it on do you hear the compressor cut in? Cut it from fan to cool and see if the compressor is cutting on. If not it could be a capacitor. If not than the compressor could be shot which means a new AC unit. The good news is that they are easy to replace, just heavy to get up on the roof. I have done four of them all by my lonesome but, I don't recommend it. Get a friend to help you get the new one up on the roof and the rest is easy. You can just throw the old one off and not worry about it bending a little. Of course the wiring is already there so, it's a no brainer. The last one I bought and installed was a scratch -n- dent duotherm that works awesome. I think I bought it from PPL. It had a dent in the bottom pan that doesn't affect the performance at all.

Hopefully it's just a bad start capacitor for the compressor.
