E350 V10 - Slow Fuel Fill

Hi.. I didn't find any related threads doing a search, so I thought I'd ask in a new one.

It takes forever to fill our fuel tank... you have to hold the handle just slightly and dribble in the gas, or it clicks off

The fuel filler and vent return are all the way aft in the box, and the fuel tank is way forward near the rear axle... I figure the problem can be one of two things:

1. the filler and vent lines dip down below the tank fill, causing a P-trap

2. the vent line is plugged

any help would be appreciated

  • Excellent! Now you can help the next person with the same complaint with their motor home. :)
  • Awesome glad to hear you fixed it. It's amazing what a "little clog" can do.

    FIXED !!! :D

When I saw that both the big fuel line and small vent line were both really long and not well routed, in that they went downhill from the filler neck, then back uphill to the fuel tank, I was discouraged.

I decided to tackle the easier vent line, and hope that was enough to fix the problem.. it was!

When I shortened the vent line with a hacksaw, removing the P-trap, about half an ounce of fuel spilled out, plenty enough to block the air vent.

So I took about 8 inches off, bent it to fit, and reattached it. Just came back from the Mobil station, where I filled it to the top (it was about half empty) at full flow rate, without any instances of it "clicking off"

    yeah!!!

Ford ships the chassis with the filler lined up with the tank inlet. The MH builder often wants the filler elsewhere. Ours is back in the last foot of the long rear overhang. JAYCO might have wanted it away from the LPG-fired fridge. The filler is not high enough in the body, and the piping, along with its hangers, are Mickey Mouse at best. Fueling nose-low helps us a lot.
  • That would have to be quite annoying.

I would inspect the filler tube from below and make sure it is not folded, kinked, collapsed, twisted, or something else deforming it's round-ish shape. Temporarily resolved it with hose clamps & wire ties only to prove that is the cause. If successful, come up with a more permanent solution.

Hose clamps properly positioned and adjusted can open up a collapsed rubber filler tube....for experimentation purposes, not a permanent solution.

    Just an idea.
  • There is a TSB on slow fills on some Super Duty chassis'. You may want to have a dealer check your MY for it. I had an 05 SuperDuty that hated fill ups.
  • I always try to find a spot where I can have the front end lower.
  • On my MH my fuel hose from the tank to gas cap was held up with zip ties. They broke allowing the hose to drop and collasp. Adding a metal bracket now holding in place.
  • I would say first thing to check is the vent line. I found a buddy's motorhome had a loop around the fuel filler line, so it was sure bet the vent line would fill with gas at each fill stop, and unlikely it would drain out before the next fuel fill. I corrected that problem in Bowling Green, and getting gas on the way back to Long Beach CA, we where able to quickly fill, and get more gas into the tank each time. It went from barely getting in 30 gallons to a fairly quick fill of 32 gallons, and we could trickle in more if we wanted to. We even got 38 gallons into the tank once on the return trip.

Soon after than trip, he installed a second tank, using parts from another 1986 E-250 van forward tank, I installed the fuel tank transfer switch and valve, new fuel filler, and used some 2" 14 gauge tubing to use as fuel line - so we did not use the flex hose the whole way. He can now get 19 gallons into the front tank, and 39.4 gallons into the rear tank if he ran it dry, then transferred to the forward tank.

So if you can shorten the vent line, it might keep it from retaining fuel in it.

On my 1975 F-350, I found the forward tank was not venting properly. So I was able to install a second vent line, using parts that I was able to order from TransferFlow.com - but they are not selling as many gas tank repair parts anymore, due to more restrictions putting modified fuel tanks on gas powered vehicles.

If you need to order replacement gas fuel hose, or the vent line by the foot, that can be one source. However also Napa.com can sell the vent hose and filler hose by the foot, many times without shipping if your local dealer has it on hand.
