Electric Entry Step....How to diagnose and repair

Hello all--

I have a Coach Step, Inc Part# 725-0051 Single Step Assembly.

It stopped working. I could hear the motor making noise but step would not retract/deploy.

I removed the cam assembly and cleaned and lubed the ball joints. I turned the motor on before reinstalling cam and motor appeared to be working fine. Step moved in/out smoothly without cam installed.

Installed cam and all worked great for about the next 2 hours. My kids were getting in and out of RV several times in that time and it worked perfect.

All of sudden it stopped deploying completely. The motor gear turns but keeps on turning a few seconds after it is deployed. Once motor stops, the step can be moved in and out so there in no solid stopping/engaging.

There appear to be several parts involved in these electric steps.

1. Motor with small gear
2. Larger gear assembly which is turned by motor.
3. Electronic unit which I believe is some sort of replay.

What can be bad?
How can motor be tested?
Can it be relay?
Larger gears assembly?

Thanks!

  • If old motor runs normally, it's more likely that some mechanism is broken or a gear is stripped.
  • I found this information that I posted a while back and how I repaired my BIL's step on his class A Monaco

"I did research and found that by looking on the NAPA internet site they had photos of the lift motors. I found that a 1986-1995 Ford Taurus left front window lift motor matched my motor. NAPA part # BK655-1395 $63.99 I ordered my motor from Auto-Zone Manufactured by Dorman part# 742-206. This has a lifetime Warranty and was $49.99. .

Also carefully inspect those plastic gears

Dave, thanks for the link. That looks just like my motor. I have the numbers but they do not match this one on Amazon.

How would I know it's the motor that is bad? It looks like when under load the gear just spins and will not lock in position.

We actually got the part number for ours from IRV2 - take a look at the link above. I can't remember who told us but we ordered what they told us and that is the one I posted the link for on Amazon.

Your description of your problem sounds a lot like how ours started. Eventually the steps would not go in or out at all although the motor would keep running making a really loud noise.

  • motor replacement

We replaced the motor with the above link. Turns out it was the same motor that is used for electric windows. Works great now. try to see if you can read the numbers on your motor and then search for that on Google.
