electric step out when headllights turned on...

Hi. I have a 2012 Fleetwood jamboree sport 25g ford E-450 for few months and recently, a problem occured with the electric step. When door is closed and electric step off (conditions where the step would retract), if the truck headlights are turned on, the step is pulling out. Does anybody ever heard about a link between the electric step system and the headlights?
Thanks,
Mamou from quebec
  • For me it was the 'windshield wipers' and not the headlights. The cause was a misrouted (ignition/step operation) wire to the terminal fuse box in the engine bay.
  • A few months after we bought our new 2009 Jayco Greyhawk, our step started doing weird things. It would go out as expected, but often times it would not retract, even when the key was put in the ignition. At the same time, I could not adjust the side-veiw mirrors with the controller.

We took it in to a dealer fo that and some other warranty work. We were told that the steps were wired improperly. After it was fixed, the steps worked properly and the mirrors could be adjusted too.

Bad grounds and short circuits can cause all kinds of goofy things to happen.

  • A bad ground can cause very unexpected results. Power can sometimes seek an alternative path to ground. Check the step's ground connection. Are the headlights working correctly and bright? If not check their grounds also.
