Engine Battery Not Charging

It appears that my engine start battery is not charging when plugged into 120 power. The coach batteries are OK. Voltage at the battery today was 12.08 when plugged in or running off the generator. The engine started fine and the alternator is charging just fine. Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting? 1999 Bounder 34J on a Ford chassis with V10 engine. Chuck

As designed by Fleetwood, you engine battery should charge when plugged in. The most common cause of engine battery not charging on Fleetwood products is the isolator relay in the Battery Control Center (BCC). A wiring schematic is provided on the inside of the BCC cover. Look for the round/silver relay. This has been a Fleetwood feature since the early 90s. The rest of the manufactures were late in introducing this feature, or not at all.

Thanks Richard, that was very helpful. Chuck

    Mine works like this:
    1. Engine charges engine battery and coach batteries
    2. Generator running charges coach batteries only
    3. Shore power charges coach batteries only
I sometimes use a small trickle charger plugged in to charge engine battery when on shore power or generator power.

Is yours an older Fleetwood? Chuck
  • I can easily wire in an echo charger from the house bank to the engine start battery if it isn't being charged from another source. I removed the small solar panel off the top of the AC on the roof because it had disintegrated. I just don't want to do anything IF this engine battery is suppose to be charged off the 120 charger. I know it ws said that "most" don't charge this way, but some do via a switch or solenoid.Chuck
  • Google Trik L Start - inexpensive device which is easy to install and allows your chassis battery to charge when plugged in.

My 2010 Truck with all of its computers and electronics doesn't like sitting very long either. I picked up one of those small wattage SOLAR PANELs from AMAZON that sits inside the truck windshield area. This is plugged into an always hot 12VDC socket. Completely out of the way laying on the truck dash. Keeps my truck start battery topped great...

Mine was only a 5WATT panel and I really should have found one with more wattage.

  • Most converters/inverters DO NOT charge the engine batteries when plugged in. They are set up to charge the coach batteries only. It will take a separate battery charger or a little re-wiring to charge both the house and chassis batteries when plugged in to 120 VAC.
