You didn't say how old your Holiday Rambler was or if you had docking lights on the sides. Tiffin puts dock lights on their rigs, but in my opinion they might as well save their money. The dock lights point rearward and are good for backing into a spot at night, and we all know how many RV'ers do that. When we are traveling, as opposed to sightseeing, we usually start at 3:30 or 4 in the morning and have similar problems to the ones your husband experienced with the ditch. While at Quartzsite last year I picked up a set of lights similar to these. Although these are not the same brand as I have, it looks like they'll work about as well. I installed them in the side of the front cap just at the rear edge of the cap. VERY bright and work well.
