external lp tank

wanting to hook up a 250 gallon external LP tank at sons property for extended stays. the tank is 70 feet from the small underbelly Motorhome tank. I have been told by some that if you do not regulate the larger tank properly the the oil in the LP will separate and cause problems at the various on board appliances orifices. What size or where could I obtain the information?

  • our rig is currently parked in our seasonal site in the dead of a chicago winter.

We had them bring out and hookup a 250# propane tank. The local gas company delivered the tank and it had a regulator attached to it.
The next day, the tech from the gas company came out, took thier regulator off, disconnected my regulator from my tank, and ran a hose straight off the big tank to the input side of the motorhome's regulator.
Works fine, and since the gas company did it i can only assume it is done the right way

Usually big tanks have regulators right at the valve.. HOWEVER...

You have been misinformed. The regulator is not much different than the one already on your motor home.. Just higher capacity is all.

The oil in the tank may separate, yes, that can happen. And if it does it can clog up the regulator (Not much else).. but that is as true of the motor home's mounted tank as it is the big one.

And what's more.. The big one it's more likely to separate inside the tank and stay there. EXCEPT WHEN THE TANK IS BEING REFILLED.

Which is why you turn the valve OFF when refilling.

  • A regulator needs to be at the bottle. It is there to automatically shut off the gas in the case of a line breech. When it flows faster than normal it simply shuts off supply. You can keep the regulator inline at the MH, I do this with grill bottles all the time. Never heard of the oil theory.

  • When we were hooked up to a big tank at a camp host site, the big tank had a regulator already on it. The following year when we had to use smaller tanks externally, we did connect a regulator. We don't know if because the set up was for an rv exclusively, the gas company put the regulator on, or if there would always be one on a big tank.
