EZ Pass in rental car?

We have the I Pass (EZ Pass) from IL, the transponder is easily moved from mh to toad - and both are registered. I need to rent a car for a family event - can I use my transponder in the rental? Of course, there are toll roads to our destination :) thanks, Kathy

    I'd ask the rental agency.

It seems likely the rental car would already have one.

most rental agencies will be happy to supply one...at a hugely inflated price. if the OP already has a transponder i'd absolutely use it.

That easy pass is registered to ONE car. I don't think you can use it between different cars. Might want to check with the EasyPass people, NOT the retal car people.

I think you are correct. Our son had an accident that totaled his car. I got a rental car for him and took it to the site where the car was towed. He called EZ-Pass on his cell phone and had the transponder transferred to the rental car for a few days.
  • Google is your friend!

    Can I user between cars?

Yes, you may transfer a tag between vehicles as long as they are of the same vehicle class. There are penalties for using a tag in a different vehicle class (i.e. Car tag in a tractor-trailer
  • In NY I need 2 EZ passes, 1 for the RV and one for the car. The RV EZ pass is for a truck with duel rear wheels and the one for the toad is a regular EZ pass. I keep the toad pass in the holder when towing so it does not register, the toll gate picks up the number of axels.

  • yes, you can use it in your rental car. see below:

If I am driving a rental car on the Illinois Tollway, how can I pay my tolls?

First, check with your rental car company on its policy for paying tolls. Some rental car companies provide transponders. In such cases, be sure you understand how to use the transponders and how you will be charged for transponder-based tolls. Inquire about transponder availability and fees with the rental agent.

Second, if your rental car company does not provide a transponder or you do not want to use the transponder they provide, you have two options:

    • Pay the cash tolls.
    • Use your I-PASS or E-ZPass transponder.

Be sure to mount the transponder on the inside of the windshield, next to the rearview mirror, to help ensure that the transponder signal is received.

Review your I-PASS account activity regularly to ensure the charges are accurate.

We do NOT recommend adding rental car license plates to your account.

In the event your transponder signal is not properly read while in the rental car, there is a possibility you will receive a violation notice. The violation notice will be sent to the rental car company, which is the registered owner of the vehicle. The rental car company then has two options: 1) by Illinois law, it may re-assign the violation notice to you based on its record of who was renting the vehicle when the violations were incurred; or 2) it may choose to pay the notice and bill you. If a rental car agency chooses to pay the notice and bill you, you will not be eligible for the settlement guidelines.
