Failed Smog Teas

Hi we failed the smog test on our 1995 Fleetwood Bounder. The first time we did not pass, it passed this area but failed the fuel evap test is had passed before the fuel emission test, after a tune up it 2 different test facilities because the first one did not do repairs. I am confused and in need of advice. Thanks. Its an F53 on ford chassis 460 ford motor as I remember.

Doesn't CA have an age after which you don't need emissions? If it's 25 years, you're already there.

For a brief time there was a rolling 25 year exemption. Then unfortunately California stopped granting exemptions at 1974 model year. I remember it happening because I was waiting for my 1977 to go exempt when the law changed and stopped at 74.
  • With the age of your coach, you have to consider that rubber components have degraded to the point where you could have a vacuum leak, etc. You also have O2 sensors that may be due for replacement, or bad plugs, ignition wires, as well as other emission components/sensors. Your engine was used in numerous vehicles and any shop with a diagnostic machine should be able to tell you where your problem is and decipher whether it is a leaking hose of a bad component.
  • Tuna,

You have another decade or two before you are grandfathered out.

If you are near Newark, call Applied GMC. They will work on most and his guys are pretty smart about this stuff.

  • Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.

  • Tune up generally does not cover evaporative emissions issues.

I assume there is a vacuum leak in the fuel vapor containment system that needs to be fixed. Could be a loose gas cap for all I know. Need a shop that does emissions repairs.
