I feel your pain. What we have found is that how it "is driven" by the testers can effect the results. The test site nearest us has always failed our 1986 RV with a 460 and the 1985 El Camino with a 305 while the test center 16 miles away passes them. My suggestion is find a test center in an area that has more old cars than new ones to take it to that center. I understand how you feel about paying a someone $80.00 to get it to pass but you could end up spending more than that just on fuel for repeated trips to the test center.
