Fiberglass Roof Leak

I have an annoying roof leak that I have been unable to find and stop the leak. I even took it to Camping World and they did their smoke test on it and couldn't find it. It is in the area of the plastic dome over my shower. I have recaulked it several times and put a clear sealant over it, but to no avail. Any ideas on how to got about it next.?

Not sure what a 'smoke' test is. Never heard of that. You mean a blower door test maybe? You pressurize the inside of the unit and use soapy water on the outside to see where the leaks are. Only method I know of.

Years ago you installed a "smoke" machine in the RV and closed up the RV. When the Smoke machine ran long enough to pressure up the RV, you looked for smoke coming out. NOT a very good way even back then. Now, the way is to pressurize the RV and then spray soapy water at ALL seams and areas and look for bubbles. Doug
  • Visibly check the outside of the skylight, we had a small crack in ours. I'm not sure but maybe with the pressure test, it put enough pressure from the inside to seal up the crack, then pressure, rain water from the outside would leak in.
Ours was a very small crack, about a 1/2" in length up from the flange that is glued to the roof.

    That's called SealTech.

    I'm getting old and feeble...lol

The trade name escaped me but I know that CW is a licensed franchisee of the system. Not sure if it's available at every location.

I don't use 'smoke' at all. Just positive pressure and a water soap solution and of course a tech with a grease pencil to mark all the leak locations.

    Thanks you Mr. Plante

Next step might be to remove the dome and thoroughly remove all caulk (quite a job, especially if there's silicone residue) and bedding the dome on some fresh butyl tape. As Bruce said, examine the dome carefully for cracks or other damage.

sounds like a plan to me

  • I had a small leak above mine also maybe the size of a nickel. I cleaned it up real good and re caulked it with dicor self leveling caulk. Next good rain it leaked again. Got some 4 inch Enternabond tape and I have not had a drip sence.

  • Clear sealant? Sure hope you did NOT use a silicone based product? If so, your basically screwed. Nothing will stick now.
Instead of taking it to CW, you need to find a dealer thst offers seal test. They presurize the interior with air and spray everything outside with soapy water. Any bubbles will be marked for fixing. Done right you will find the leak. BTW just because your roof is fiberglss does not make it immune to cracking and leaks.
