fiberglass roofs

What Class A MHs from 2002 to 2006 have factory fiberglass roofs? I know that Winnebagos do but what others came that way new? My current MH has a rubber roof and don't want that hassle on my next unit that will probably be my last.

  • Curious as to what hassles you have had with rubber you won't have with fiberglass.
  • My 2004 Newman has a fiberglass roof and all the Newmar's I looked at from 2002 to 2008 had them.

    Well Sir,
Like you, I too had a rubber roof on our previous coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder, 34V with the F-53 and V-10. Nice coach, served us well for over 7 years. But, I was never comfortable with a rubber roof. I kept good care of mine. I washed it regularly, and finally re-coated it with a Dicor system. It looked great but, I still don't like ANY FORM of rubber roof, no matter what material it's made with.

So, I too, wanted a fiberglass roof on our next coach. So, because we happened upon an '07 Itasca Meridian for sale in Quartzsite one year at the RV event, we learned that most, if not all, Itascas and Winnes have fiberglass roofs. Yahoooo.

So, long story short, we ended up with an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT. I personally are much more at ease with that roof then I ever was with a rubber one. It's a preference thing.

  • Lots of units have them, trying to get them all listed here would be about impossible.

Having said that, keep in mind the rubber roof on your current MH (assuming it's the one in your signature) isn't the same as you'll find today.

Most today use a TPO material, the older ones are EPDM - 2 completely different animals. Like you, I would shy away from an EPDM roof, having owned (3) TPO type roofs now I'd take another in a heartbeat. It's as tough as nails and wears like iron - and if there ever is an issue it's a LOT easier to take care of.

I also own a TT - it has the true EPDM rubber roof. As part of the rebuild I replaced the roof, by myself. After the prep work was done it only took me a few hours to glue the new rubber down - fairly easy job that still looks great today.

Also keep in mind just because it's "fiberglass" doesn't mean it's quality. Do a search on all the issues Winnie has had with their roofs; Is Fiberglass always better? I don't think so.

And then there was our friends with their Georgetown. They too wouldn't buy a unit without a fiberglass roof. Sure it was fiberglass alright, I guess, but "quality" isn't a term I'd use to describe it. They no longer have the Georgetown, and the roof was just one of many issues.

Check the thickness of some of the stuff builders are laying down - it's paper thin stuff that will break down over the years. Sun and UV takes it's toll on fiberglass just like it does every other material.

My point? I wouldn't get hung up on a fiberglass roof nearly as much as I'd be looking for a known quality builder.

With any roof, even fiberglass, you still have to get up on the roof periodically and inspect it and re-caulk seams if necessary. All roofs, no matter what type have holes and seams and they all need to be maintained. I don't find a TPO roof any more hassle than a fiberglass one.
  • airstream land yachts have fiberglass roofs, stopped making the land yachts in 2005.

  • Well, NationalRV used fiberglass roofs, but to get one of them, it'll have to be a used coach. NationlRV went down around 2006.

As a sidebar, speaking of fiberglass roofs, I found a product that cleans them....wonderful. ALSO makes an old awning look brand new! Did my 16 foot awning in about 10 minits!! It's called Mr.Clean Magic Mop. 14 bucks. Got a few replacement heads (for future use)...
