Filling with fresh water

newbie question... when I used to fill the fresh water on the toyhauler it was with a hose shoved into an open port on the side. When it started overflowing it was full. The gauge/meter showing tank capacity was never that accurate.

Our Class A requires we thread the hose onto the valve and then switch some valves to fill the tank. No way for the water to run back out the inlet hose hole like the toyhauler did.
Am I stuck just watching the gauge/meter and shut it off when the meter shows full and hope it is accurate OR does the tank have some sort of an overflow that I can fill until it tops itself off ??

When we do out dry camping I want as much fresh water onboard as possible.

  • There ahould be a vent for the tank. Possible under the coach. Mine has a shut off valve on it that I have never closed.
  • There is a vent and you will hear/see water running out when the tank is full
  • Previous and current motor home has fresh water overflow relief.

When water starts to spill on the ground, its full. Have never looked under rv to see where the water overflow is, but want to believe it seals good after overflow to keep out bugs, dirt, etc.
  • Word of caution. The overflow on mine was a 1/2inch clear tube in the fill compartment and I could see the water start to run down it before it started building up pressure I would then quickly shut it off. The garden hose has a lot more volume and pressure than would be able to escape from that small overfill hose. The water tank was plastic and sandwiched in between the tongue & groove hard wood floor and steel supports underneath, the tank would expand and lift the floor.

That happened to the previous owner and I was pretty paranoid it would happen to me. I took that job very seriously, since I did not want it to happen again.

Our tank is under the bed, so rather than trust the lights, I usually watch it, if filling to max., even though it does have two overflows at the top. Some you can easily see the level and some not, I guess.
