Filter for a/c unit in ceiling

Have the standard filter that came in a/c unit......very thin black/grey foam material, and it is falling apart due to 2003 class C unit. What do you guys replace it with? Do I go to Lowe's and look for similar foam material, or take standard HVAC filter and cut to size? Thanks in advance!
