Finally Sold

Finally sold my 99 DSDP and thought I would share my experience.

I found a lot of useful advice on this forum and other sites. I checked prices everywhere and checked for the same models with the same features. One of the major sites states it takes around 180 days to sell a MH, and I was close. (I did take it off the market for a month or so to fix a few things.)

I priced below NADA low retail and was prepared to negotiate but did have to drop the price twice. I offered it inspected and certified or for $2500 less, as is.

Three serious couples came to look this weekend. The ones on Friday said they would let me know. The one on Saturday spent over 2 hours with me going over everything (he had recently sold his gasser), took it for a test drive and then pulled out his checkbook for a deposit. I think the clincher was that I also offered to deliver it, only a couple of hours away.

The other two called back Saturday night wanting to buy, but it was too late.

I did advertise on some forums, rvt.com, autotrader.ca and Kijiji. I also caved and allowed a broker to list it on his site.

I got inquiries form all sites except the broker site, lesson learned.

Many other broker sites called and claimed they had lists of people just waiting to buy my MH, I only need to pay them $200-$300 and they would put me in contact with them.

I suggested that if they had that many ready to buy, I would pay them $300 after the sale if one of their clients bought it - seems most of these folks don't have a sense of humour!

(One lady was really pushy to the point of being rude - not a way to do business!) One broker used a recorded message asking me to call back - they called daily for weeks!

Lots of people came to look (saw the sign from the highway or the ads) but most were only "tire kickers" and didn't know a DP from a gasser and were usually shocked at the asking price, which was clearly displayed. A few were knowledgeable but either had a MH they had to sell first or needed to find financing. Some offered a trade for a boat. One couple wanted to rent it for the summer.

Also a lot of emails asking for more details, but no one ever followed up.

Anyhow, a great relief to finally sell and can now concentrate on the upgrades I want to do on my 2003 DSDP in the spring.

P.S. I was OK with what I sold it for, but like everyone else I would have liked a bit more and needed to sell it before winter and having to store two MHs.

  • Sounds like it takes a lot of patience and tenacity to go through that process. I'm glad you finally got through it.

When I bought my present rig, I had another one that I needed to unload too. I put it on eBay, and like you I got a little less than I would have liked, but was overall happy with it. The beauty of eBay is that it was all over in a matter of days. Sold it to a local guy who had his own credit, and it was gone the day after the auction ended.
  • I have mine on CL and RVtrader. Only two people have come to look at it, one bought it but it fell through due to weird circumstances. The next couple were not buyers, just lookers.

I am finding the email requests I get for more details are really just fishing for a reply to get my email so they can start spamming me. They are usually from some free email and many times the details are in the ad. I am no longer responding to email inquiries.

I get the phone calls daily of people wanting to either list it on their site where it is guaranteed to sell, buy it wholesale to put on a dealer's lot or they want to put it up as a rent-to-own type of thing.

I figure if it doesn't sell, I will just keep it.
  • Thanks for the info. I liked your broker information. Reminds me of my Real Estate office I am using to sell a piece of land. The only time I hear from them is when it is time to renew the contract and all of a sudden there are 2-3 couples interested and the property is being shown.

Just curious, since the brokers were worthless fee hogs and the For Sale sign courted the passing tire-kickers, what method lured the final buyer to your door?

You should consider establishing an email account just for the motorhome sale.
  • I suppose I should consider myself very lucky. Sold our 2001 DSDP through PPL in less than three weeks and got more than NADA low retail - after paying the commission.
  • I just sold my DP on Friday. I listed it 2 times on ebay and once on Craig's list. I got several inquiries from both listings including 3 or 4 wanting to exchange for real estate. I sold it after all the listings had expired.

I sold the MH for the average retail price. Fortunately, I sold it in about 3 weeks time. I wish I knew the secret to selling a MH is a short period of time so I could share it with others looking to sell. The only thing I can say is make sure it is priced correctly, is exceptionally clean and include many pictures in any listings. Also, be willing to negotiate. Slightly reducing the price maybe worth it rather than having the MH set around for many months while it depreciates and costs you money for registration, insurance and, in some states like PA, annual inspection costs.

The final buyer saw it on autotrader.ca. The one who responded just a few hours too late saw it on rvt.com. Considering I thought rvt.com was more US based, I was a bit surprised as there are only a few Canadian listings - but it was free so nothing to lose:)

Through autotrader.ca and rvt.com they did not have my email directly. They would only have known when I replied (I would know their email before they would know mine)- their email information comes through the web site. I did list a phone number for an IP phone site that I am planning to discontinue.
