Because of pest infestations, you can pick up a heavy fine some places for dragging in firewood from wherever you were the night before. I use firewood to heat the sticks 'n' bricks, so I buy it by the cord, and yes, it is indeed MUCH cheaper that way. And yes, it is very expensive to buy a handful locally. But my forests are SOOOOO much more valuable than saving a couple bucks on a campfire, I suck it up and buy it locally wherever I go. At $10 a night for a campfire, that's still the cheapest thing in my campsite.
