I haul my own if I am camping close to home. Prefer not to haul the extra weight on longer hauls, so I try to find a place outside the CG where it tends to be cheaper.
Once, going to Lancaster for a week, I place an ad on the local Craig's List for firewood...with a clearly spoken warning that I was not interested in cleaning anyone's yard, cutting down any trees, or splitting any wood (Craig's List is full of "Free" firewood---you only have to cut down a tree for them--:B)
I actually found a cabinet maker who milled his own boards. He had a massive stack of slat wood (a small piece where they cut off the bark---square the tree) that he used to heat his shop. The stack was growing faster then he was burning it. Put all I wanted into my truck for a grand total of $10.00.
Late May--- day temps 50-70, evenings in the 30's. We burned a lot of wood, still gave some to a girl scout troop pulling in as we pulled out.
Unless there is a mill around, chances are you will find it cheaper the farthest away from a CG or other tourist trap you can get.
