They have to be careful not to blow away the diesels.

Yes, it's technologically possible to have the gas engine outperform the diesel engines but since it has a much lower markup, they don't want to cannibalize diesel sales.

That said, other than exhaust brake and a slight advantage at altitude due to turbo (which could be added to the gas engines if desired), the newish gas engines blow away the diesels from 15-20yrs ago..
