Fridge door hindge pin broke off

Domentic NDR1292 - it's a two door model that came OE with my Gulfstream 38' DP

Issue is the main door the bottom hindge snapped off. Broke the plastic around where the hinge pin was mounted in the door itself

Fridge is still working and door stays closed, just to open the fridge you take the entire door off.

I can't get a good look at the damage, as we are in the field, and its a heat wave. I'll be home in a week and can work on it then. I am wondering if others have had this issue.

Is this something that will require a new door? I can't see how to fix this
  • Yes, clearly it's a poor design. The OEM pin is really small -however on my door the hole for the pin goes up a long way.

For temp fix, I got a #8 x2" machine screw, nuts and matching washers. Put the screw thru the lower bracket, then washer, then nut, another washer - the trick was I had to put the door on before screwing the screw up into the RV door- but that was easy enough to do.

I figure once I get off the road, a little JB Weld may be enough to fix up the area that broke off when the pin snapped out. I may also make this entire area stronger by bolting in an overlay piece of metal Not sure yet.

On my door next to where the bottom hinge pin is there is a 2nd flathead hextop bolt. I believe this bolt is to align the door. It looks to me that the bottom of the fridge door may have got hung on this bolt, and then when closing the door the leverage broke out the hinge pins. The person closing the door would not have notices the broken pin - just that the door clicked when closing, but then the next one to open would have the door fall off on them. I'm going to modify this area so there is no metal lip to hang up on.
