I don't know about automatic mode. If you run your fridge off 12v batteries when the engine is not running, you will ruin your batteries.
You can run the refer off 12v batteries when you are driving and the batteries are being charged. But you should move the fridge over to either propane or electric when you are stopped.
Even if you are plugged into electrical, and you converter/charger is charging your 12v batteries, it will not keep up with the draw your fridge will pull from your batteries. Unless you have an aftermarket charger that puts out more amps.
So, yes, the vendor is correct. Yes, you should switch over to propane when stopped.
