front protective film

I have a 2004 pusher with the protective film on the front that has become very ugly, looks like rust is under under it in a crazed design, and needs to be removed. I am using an ice scraper and decal remover which is very slow.
Has anyone done this successfully and what did you use to get it off ?

  • Small clothes steamer softens the film but won't damage the paint. Lots of plastic razor blades. We used Auto Tech adhesive remover we got from an auto paint supplier, works great. Had no luck with the brands at the box stores.
  • I just removed mine about one month ago. I used the heat of the morning sun (at Myrtle Beach) to warm the film. I used plastic razor blades to start an edge, then pulled firmly on the film at an angle to remove it. It tears at times but I was able to pull off some fairly large pieces. Not sure that will work with film that has really gone bad and cracked into many pieces.

Once the film is removed, I used mineral spirits to soften the glue, scraped off as much as I could with the plastic razor blades (had to do the mineral spirits and scraping two or three times in spots), then did the final clean up with a rag and lacquer thinner. I tried Goo Gone and Goof Off and neither of them worked as well as the mineral spirits/lacquer thinner combination. I also checked with a friend who runs an auto body shop and he said the mineral spirits and lacquer thinner would work as well as the other commercial adhesive removers, including the 3M stuff.

I was lucky and my paint was pristine under the film. I used some Meguairs cleaner/wax on the paint and it looks like new.
  • Thanks Lonny
I'm hoping someone will have a chemical to use, making the rounds at automotive shops also.
  • we removed most of ours. Heat gun or hair dryer. Be careful not to get it too hot. Softens the film, scrape with plastic scraper. Be careful not to gouge the paint underneath. Once you get the film off, use Goo Gone to remove the adhesive. Took us 2 whole days 2 people and we didn't get it all off. Gave up and took it to a paint and body shop to remove the rest and touch up the front paint. Unfortunately no easy way to get it off. Lots of elbow grease, sore fingers and profanity!! We got quotes of $800-$1100 to remove it with no guarantee they wouldn't have to repaint the front cap.
