I don't know what your rig is, but my DP has a 100 gallon tank which gives me about 700 miles before I really have to find fuel. So when I've done cross country travel once I've done about 500 miles I start looking and I make sure to look in rural areas versus while transiting a metro area. For example if I was heading South on I-5 getting ready to go through Los Angeles and I knew I didn't have enough fuel to get all the way through, I'd be stopping outside of Bakersfield at one of the truck stops and filling up.
