I am considering getting one of the Fumoto valves to make it easier to collect a periodic oil sample (I have one of the hand pumps but it doesn't seem to work that well with my particular dipstick tub...

I think Fumoto valves are great for draining oil during a oil change. I have one on every vehicle and engine I own. Makes life so much easier! But that is the last place you want to take a oil sample from. Way to much chance of dirt contamination!!! You are far better off using a vacuum pump similiar to the one from Blackstone Labs. With it you know you have a clean sample. You may just need a longer tube (1/4" refrigerator tubing) for your particular dipstick tube configuration.
