Heck, I bet my oil cooler retains a few ounces by itself.

Had one on my CTD. I could line it up with the opening on a an old outboard motor plastic fuel tank and let er go. It worked perfectly. No oil pan to try and dump when it was over. Made sleeve out of a 2 liter pop bottle for the filter and I could unscrew it with no mess. Took all of 15 minutes to do both without spilling a drop.

Pop bottle (or any plastic bottle) oil filter catch can is one of the best ideas I've never heard of thought of!
I have a few engines that make a mess and that would work way better then the drop into a plastic bag method.

A lot depends on the drain plug location. My Cummins is directly on the bottom and I roughly measured the thickness of the threads to see how much the valve would stick up past the bottom of the pan. The difference between the valve and the drain plug height was minimal so while there may be a bit of oil left, it isn't enough to cause me any worries.

IMO as much oil as you can get out of there the better, I have the same Cummins you do :)

It surprised me how much came out when I pulled the fumoto, after it drained. The fact you even bothered to measure means you knew what was happening. Try pulling the fumoto the next time ,and see what you think. I meant to catch that part separately this last time but didn't , I will definitely do it the next time.

I cut grooves in the end of the threads before installing the valve and it will drain fully in my application. I am sold on this valve.

Well there you go. The fact is it does not let all the oil out, it can't there are threads inside the pan.

That is a great idea, I like the fumoto, don't like the fact that it leaves dirty oil in there. I checked once on how much threads was sticking up inside was not a lot but enough to stop some flow. Wouldn't take much on the grooves.

HMMMMM you are concerned about the extra oil? Why since the 8 oz left in the pan has no way out after dropping the stock plug what's another few ounces?

That pan was designed to add 12 quarts of oil, the manual says 12 quarts of oil. I put in 12 quarts of oil . The Fumoto drain valve will not let all the oil drain out of there, never measured it, but its enough.

I am not concerned with overfilling, I'm concerned with adding more undrained oil to the mix. You claim there is 8oz left in there, and now add that with the oil the Fumoto won't let drain.

My objective is to get as much used oil out of there as possible, the Fumoto will not let you do that. All one has to do is let it drain until it stops with the Fumoto, and then pull the Fumoto, and watch the additional oil drain. I have done this the last two times.

Your claim there is 8oz left in there, I don't care, can't to anything about it, but I can with the Fumoto. We have two different concerns. I want as much oil out of there as possible, you don't want to overfill. You add back in 11 quarts ,and 24oz, and save the left over 8 oz. I dump in the entire 12 quarts, its never been over the full mark that I can tell or care.

To be out of the safe zone it has to be two quarts low, you think 8oz is going to change much, when supposedly you can run that engine down almost two quarts ( 64 oz ) ,and STILL be in the safe zone. 8 times what you are worried about. IMO a half quart 8oz one way or the other is a non issue.

I used one on my Jeep TJ. Made changing oil easier and a bit less messy. But it is more exposed and vulnerable; I had an engine skid plate so didn't matter. Also, the local Walmart refused to change my oil because the oil pan was no longer "stock".

I have one on my 2011 GMC 2500HD 6.0 and it is nice to be able to put a 15" hose on it and not spill any oil. I had a cut up oil jug that I used before that that caught the oil and redirected it into pan, but still had some cleanup. Yep, it does run a bit slow, but as others, I take the time to grease and top fluids.

I need to figure out a better way to not make any mess with the filter change next...
