furnace noise

Just brought my 05 Newmar Kountry Starhome today. While getting used to it and having the heat come on there is a considerable amount of fan noise being generated from under the refer where the heater is located. Could the fan be going out and if so is it easy to replace from outside the rig or does one take the whole heater out from the inside.

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

  • Read installation manual for your furnace, determine how large the intake screen must be and reduce the intake screen by blocking all but what is needed. Line the area where the furnace is installed with sound deadening material from car stereo shop.

I did this plus a few other mods and reduced the noise by 50%.

The vent opening on mine was twice the size the manufacturer required.

    Pogoil.
  • The furnace is open to the living area and right under the refer. I too can hear the fan or more accurately the fan and air. Can also hear the burner burning away. It is just the nature of the thing when the furnace is close and has direct access to the living area.
  • In general furnaces tend to be loud - akin to jet engine on some model - so if it's just loud you may not have an issue. Most "noise" issues tend to be squeals - associated with lubrication/bearings issues or noises associated with something caught in the fan. Perhaps you can give us more info on what type of noise?
  • I've had 4 RV's with either an Attwood or Suburban furnace. All including my Newmar had a noisy furnace fan.
  • It could be just a noisy fan, if the furnace is a straight shot behind the louvers, it will be noisy, those fans are terrible when it comes to the noise level. I would love to have the 2 speed fan in the low-high fire furnace, many times you would just need the low speed, it would be much better as to the noise level, and comfort level. They start off on high fire and high speed, then switch to low fire and low speed.
The ideal furnace situation is to have the furnace in an offset location, so the air is not a direct shot from the living space. Every 90 degree bend lowers the noise level greatly.
  • Your model it is removed from the outside. But, what TYPE of noise? Newmar Motorhomes have a Aux Fan connected to a heat Duct that blows extra Furnace air to the Water Bay area. This blower fan is located in the storage next to the water bay and can produce a loud sound if defective or the impellor is bad. There is a switch in the water bay to turn this fan OFF when the furnace is running. Make sure this is not the noise. Doug

    Which furnace Brand/Model?

Service manuals available. So post the info.

Lot of times fan noise is due to debris/nest/mud dabbers in fan squirrel cage and just needs cleaned out.

It being a ducted unit (floor registers) access to furnace is via cover on outside of rig. (just above compartment storage door....just to right of fridge lower vent cover----has the intake/exhaust ports in cover-----curbside of rv)

AS the guy said in addition some models even have online video showing you how to change out the motor if necessary
