Gas Leak?

Hey gang, I am in need of some advice. Our 2015 Class C Thor Chateau Model 31E was purchased Sept of last year. I am noticing a faint propane gas smell from time to time coming from the LP fill area. I have checked everything with soap and water mixture and cant find anything and can even smell it when the valve and LP is closed off. I am taking it in for service tomorrow cause I wont this to be right before spring gets here. What do you think it could be? Should I still get a whiff from it with the propane tanks closed off?
  • Sounds like you maybe getting the smell from the blow off valve, if this is the case there probably nothing wrong but it dorsn't hurt to get it checked. Do you get the smell more after the tank was filled?
  • Right now its only 1/3 full and can still smell it. Might be that pop off valve is stuck or gone bad. Don't understand why you can still smell it with the gas turned off.
  • Based on two View Profiles I'm familiar with (2014 & 2015)..... it is very likely a failed regulator.

Reliable hearsay: the RV shop/dealer I use has replaced dozens of them last year.

Fact: Several Winnebago models & years have an LP hose recall in effect. (I'd have them check the rubber connecting hoses for hardening and cracking.)
  • I'd whip out a wand and glycerine based bubbling stuff (soapy water works, but it corrodes stuff), and go at it like that.

It almost certainly is the regulator.

While you are at it, might consider installing an Extend-A-Stay kit. This way, you can use propane cylinders for additional propane, or attach an outside stove and use it from your rig's propane system.
  • No update yet stew? Am waiting to hear about your wonderful experience with Camping Worlds service.
  • Ours was a bad regulator leaking from the forward area. Had to take off the protective cover to soapy water the regulator and found within 10 seconds.
  • No update yet Stew? I figured with all of your comments on how great the service you get from Camping World is,that they would have it fixed by now. Been 3 weeks for a simple gas leak?
  • Yes Gas leak is fixed. They had our camper for 1 week and fixed the gas leak, changed the oil in our MH, and replaced our inside tire valve extensions with better ones. Well pleased again with there service. Dropped it off Feb 3rd and picked it up on the 10th. Great people down there at the Camping World of Statesville. I have known some of those folks for years now. So that might help to my advaantage, dont know but I give credit where credit is due. The did the pressurized drop leak test on all the lines and fittings and found it was leaking at the release valve.
