Gas vs diesel coach

Gassers are not disposable. Cheaper, end of story.

I have two motorhomes. ONe is a gas class C and the other a diesel Class A. I put less miles on the C than the A by a huge margin. That is the reason the C is cheaper to maintain. If I was putting the same miles on the C as the A it would cost more to have the C. It is all how you use the coach. I change the oil in the Class A every 15000 miles and I change it in the C every 5000 so that is three oil changes to one. I flush the tranny and change the fluid every other year in my class C and I change the tranny fluid every 75000 miles in the Class A. So it depends on how many miles you drive. I have over 300K in the class A and about 60K in class Cs. In fact I am thinking of selling the Class C and getting a B on a sprinter and a diesel engine again.

I have had 2 gas and now on second DP. Will never go back. The difference is that great.

DP's will definitey reap better MPG - as much as 25% in some units. The ride, comfort, noise, all superior to a gas unit. Better electronics, frame, suspension, higher end ammenities, the list goes on and on. You pay for that. Plain and simple.

Look at all the FOR SALE ADDS not many drive 5000 miles a year!!! Very commom 10 yr old motor home have 20,000 miles or less!!! If they were dsls they would not even be broken in yet!!! Buy the box wife likes what is the motor does not mean much to the BOSS !!!! If she happy we are all happy!!! rvtommy

Thegrunt - Big subject and you have not been very specific. A small diesel like a Mercedes one costs about the same to maintain as a big gas motor. And when you add in the better fuel miles per gal on the diesel it is likely cheeper than a big V8 or V10. But maintenance on a big diesel like a Cummins or CAT 7-13 liter motor compared to a big gas, the diesel costs more to maintain. But a BMW gas motor costs more to maintain than a Chevy gas motor of similar size. Cummins and CAT motors are precision pieces capable of 500,000 - 1 million miles before overhaul. So more precision motors cost more than mass production gas ones to buy and to maintain.

In general a diesel motor is really the best one for a motorhome. Lots of torque which is what you want when you drive an RV. The other big benefits are that diesels generally at at the back of the coach so much quieter and the diesels come with air ride.

There are reasons all the big rigs are diesel. First one is that a diesel will generally go about 1/3 farther on a gallon of fuel than a gas rig will. Second is that being turbo charged, the diesel isn't going to lack for air when you climb mountains. Some folks say maintenance is higher on the diesel, but people will debate you on that. The diesel will last longer if you take care of it, however, and that can translate into higher resale value. Finally, the torque curve of a diesel is much better suited for dragging around heavy loads. This will show up when you test drive one of them.

And yes, I drive a diesel. Actually two, my TV and a diesel Jetta VW. And no, I won't go back to gas. Next vehicle I buy, I'm holding out for a diesel, whether it's a car or a new TV.

The cost of preventive maintenance depends on how much you will do... My coach gets serviced every 18,000 miles. I do most of my own maintenance so my costs are for oil, filters, belts etc.

Diesel powered chassis and power trains are designed for much longer life than Gasoline powered units... But the potential is there for more expensive remedial repairs should there be a failure...

I agree on our trip this year that gas stations were a pain to say the least flling up with a diesel should be easier.

Gas definitely costs less to maintain.
Diesel typically has more cargo carrying capacity and better braking. I also like being able to use the truck lanes when fueling up.
