Generator draining house battery somehow.

RV: 1996 Georgie Boy Persuit
Generator: Kohler 5CKM21 (5 kW)

Back in Early June, I took the RV out dry camping. Running the generator overnight only (for a/c), it ran well the first two nights. On the third night, it started surging and draining the house battery. I had to run the main engine to recharge the house battery for lights and water pump. The next day, the generator ran fine initially, but began to surge and drained the house battery, then dies within a 1/2 hr of startup.

I don't think its a battery issue, because the battery, since the incident, holds a charge fine when using the lights and water pump.

I don't think it's the electrical converter because the RV has been plugged into shore power (50A) for the past 2.5 months and the batteries are still at full charge. I've been using the RV on average every other weekend during this time.

I found out that shortly before the problem started, someone plugged their RV into mine for about an hour without my permission. This may or may not have been a contributing factor.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for the help!
  • sounds like the converter is not charging the house batteries
easy enough to check with a volt meter when the generator is running
could be a tripped circuit breaker in your panel, or blown fuses on the converter
  • Siriddy,

If the coach has not been yours all its life, I would check for some PO rearrangement of circuits and also check for and out the converter.

I know you think the converter is good, but you should check it out. Many coaches have had the APU (genset) charging system disconnected and start and run the APU off the house bank. That bank being recharged by the converter. But, if the converter is making it or the APU is drawing too much power, then what you are describing is quite possible.

A service shop that is an authorized Kohler dealer.
A Google search for Kohler generators would probably be helpful.

I think the odds are great that this will NOT be a user serviceable problem.
