Generator trouble

Hello All-
Here is the problem. I have a 97 Class C with 40k miles. I just had the generator tuned up because we bought a new ac. It worked perfect and the generator hours read 44hrs.

I tried to start the generator multiple times on different days and it gives a weak battery scenario (won't even attempt to turn over). With the power cord unhooked from the female house power port, the generator will start and run but it seems like its in a choke mode and puts a lot of smoke out.

With the motor of the rig running, it all works perfectly. The generator starts right up and runs great.
The battery and posts appear clean, so I don't know what the heck is going on.
I did just install a 5star tune, just in case that matters.
(I am no mechanic)

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,Taylor
  • Would check if the generator is hooked up to the house battery or the truck battery, sounds like it is the house battery though which can cause problems when you dry camp and run the house battery down and have to boost it enought to get the gen to start. Ours is off the truck, so even when the house is down to below 12v it will still start. The wifes mothers rv though is off the house battery, and the last camping trip we where on had to bring the jumper cables out to get the gen to start.. Our gen in a 1977 motorhome BTW only shows 90 hours of run time...
  • Two questions, first how does it start if you press the Aux or Boost switch. If it starts and runs with the switch depressed, and is sluggish and smokey when the switch is released, it's definitely the House battery(s).

Second question, why only 44 hours on a 21 year old RV generator. It should have at least 378 hours of exercise alone.
  • When you start the coach engine motor it puts both the chassis and coach batteries on-line. Since your generator only starts when you start your engine it's a clear sign of insufficient battery power. You should have your batteries tested (it's free) and clean/check the grounds to both the generator and the batteries.
