Georgie Boy Encounter Class A Gas Motor Home RV Camper

Okay, trying one more time.

We went and looked at an 1995 Georgie Boy Encounter 36' RV this evening. They are wanting 8,000 firm. Reason for the low price is the wife broke her back a few years after they purchased it and now she doesn't like to look at it as it breaks her heart knowing what "could" have been. I believe the story- turns out I *kind of* know her.

The RV has 33k miles. Interior is in pretty good shape. Exterior could use a new paint job. There are no slide outs. There is an L couch that transitions to a king bed. Bathroom is in the middle and the queen bedroom is in the back.

Would you buy? He started it up...but said we couldn't drive it for insurance reasons. I think we are going to buy it. Here are the questions I have...

1) How much would you average a new paint job?
2) I'll probably want to re-carpet and reupholster the interior just because I'm picky. Where can I get that done and any estimated costs for that?

I'm all ears if any of you have advice on this rv...thanks!
  • It seams kinda fishy . If you cant drive it let him drive and you guys ride along.
If it starts it can at least go down the drive way and back. I have full coverage insurance which covers any thing I drive ,is he saying the coach no longer has insurance ? Does the coach have current plates ? In some states expired plates could mean a fine $$,

Rhino liner. For giggles I looked into it, shiny finish, $3000, 33'. I remove graphics, saw a couple of vehicles on their lot and they looked really good.

So this is what I get out of what you are saying. He wants 8,000 FIRM he will not let you drive it and that you are picky about the cosmetics.

Respectuflly - at $8,000 you can't really be TOO picky especially about cosmetics. If I were going to be picky it would be A LOT more about the structural integrity of the coach and the condition of the tires, brakes, engine etc. The last of my concerns would be spending an enormous amount of time and money to have it repainted or to have the fabrics redone. Especially since I would not likely recoup any of that money spent. Just imagine it being flushed down the toilet if you were ever to decide to sell the coach. If you really want to be picky then be picky on something newer that doesn't need a paint job or new fabrics. IMO of course.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I have a 1999 motor home and gave up on a paint job. When I checked it was from $5000 to $10,000 and up. A 1999 is not worth the investment. Is a 1996? You be the judge.

I would want to at the very least ride in it on the road even if he has to drive. For me, no drive/ride no buy.

Last year we had a water leak and had to have the carpeting replaced. We had most of it replaced with vinyl and the slide and driver's area carpet. The cost was approx $5000. That was too high, but was necessary.

Just some thoughts for you to think on.
  • The 8 grand sounds like a reasonable price if: you can drive it, have it inspected and understand that right off the bat, you will need about 3 grand to replace the tires.
Paint job? A professional job will be from probably around 5 grand for just a basic white or white and something two tone...no graphics just straight line break.
Re-carpeting and re-upholstery will cost a couple grand easy. And if your picky, you probably will find a lot of other items you would like to upgrade.
My numbers aren't inflated at all, actually on the conservative side.
You would be many dollars ahead by forgetting this MH and find something that is in the 15 to 20 grand ballpark that will need minimal upgrading except for probably the tires. Any MH in the 90's and early 2000's will need tires, pretty safe bet.
  • If its on the Ford chassis, I wouldn't own it. I had a Georgie Boy and its a piece of junk.
Paint job will start at $10k for a mediocre job.
Find a 2000 up. Much better chassis.
  • Georgie Boy is a *very* entry level product. The overall quality is minimal.

The RV Consumer Group, for a small fee, can give you lots of info. on most any RV you are interested in. Money well spent.

I don't think I'd buy any vehicle I could not drive. The seller probably has no insurance. But there may also be an issue he's hiding from you. You just don't know for sure.
  • Is it a Ford Chassis? I recently traded a Dolphin of that era. The Ford fuel pumps have to be upgraded and they are in the tank. That price seems to be in the upper end of the "book".

Can't drive it? I'd be asking for a lot more off. What's it worth? Paint jobs aren't cheap.
