Popups are great. My kids had one as their first RV. The downside is they don't hold much in terms of storage. You'll spend a lot of time pulling tupperware tubs out after you arrive to set up camp. The other issue is you have to open it up to load each time. Should you decide to stop along the road for a meal or a snooze, you have to open it up.
Lastly, they don't usually offer much in the way of a bathroom/shower. I kind of get the feeling that you're looking to increase gas mileage by towing a shorter trailer. I doubt you would see a huge increase that would out way the value of having a more roomy/comfy TT.
