I go from 50 amp to 20 amp all the time because my RV is stored inside. I plug a 20 amp heavy extension cord directly into my 50 amp RV line with the usual step down connections. Never have had a circuit flip out. Perhaps your 20 amp GFI circuit needs to be replaced.
