All the exterior outlets on my house are GFCI as well. Are you sure yours is actually 20 amp? They might be 15 amp. At any rate when I used to plug my 50 amp hookup with the step down connections to a 15 amp GFCI, it would always trip the GFCI. So, I just wired my own 50 amp plug directly to my outside breaker panel. This is the best way to do it.
