We are looking to buy a used class A diesel pusher in a price range of $50-100k. While passing through Houston we visited PPL and found around 6 of interest, and one of particular interest, a 36 foot year 2000 Winnebago. For several reasons not particularly relevant to my question, we decided we needed to search further.We do not live in an area known for many RVs and we do expect to be traveling around the US fairly regularly, so I'm wondering if you have any suggestions as to dealers or locations that might offer good prospects. Of course we will be looking at craigslist, but, actually, we found our experience at PPL to be quite good and we are wondering if there are other "big" places you'd recommend.

Craigs List. Set the filter to Listed Today and check it every day for the areas around you.

We live at SML near you and got our current coach from Tom Johnson's in Concord, NC. They generally have a good inventory of used DP's and they have very good service. RVT does seem to have a lot of listings.Others would include Lazy Days in the Tampa area. Many, many coaches to look at.

Several good deals on Raleigh NC craigs list right now $100K and less. Some pretty nice high end ones on there. Better to buy a older high end model than a newer entry level. They are just built better.

Personally, I wouldn't touch Craigslist with a barge-pole. There are so many scam artists on there. I'd suggest looking for local dealers that handle consignments. They have often given the sellers a brisk dose of reality and the prices are reasonable.

We just sold our '02 Georgetown 32-footer through a consignment dealer, and although I'm pissed as hell over the shellacking we took, the buyer got a very good deal.

Originally, four years ago, we bought the rig from a classified ad in our local weekly paper. That's a sometimes surprisingly good source. We got a deal from a couple who were having to give up the lifestyle due to medical issues and we got it for what they still owed on their home equity loan. It was about $7000 below NADA at the time.

I'm unable to get onboard with this logic. You somehow determined that an area with few available units also means that there are few buyers? Sorry, but one does not determine the other. Where we live, in eastern PA, there is quite a shortage of inventory, and no shortage of buyers. Dealers tend to market at high NADA retail plus a few grand. OTOH, we bought our first used class A in Florida, and our second in Cincinnati, and in both cases spent a great deal less than what the same unit would sell for, quickly, in our home market.

I would determine EXACTLY what type of RV you want, and then do a nationwide search using Craig'slist, eBay, etc. Then you can choose one that is in good condition and within your price range.
Going to a dealer, or an area, with a large number of buyers just means that you MAY pay more.

We found our coach this way and found that after focusing on a couple of specific model-years searching nationally really expanded the available pool. A couple of one-way plane tickets is small change, relative to the cost of these things! Ended up flying to Portland, OR, and driving the then new-to-us coach home to NC.

For the search we compiled a list of bookmarks to used dealers and want-ad sites, which were monitored over a period of about 6 months. This gave a good feel for 'market price', relative to NADA prices, as well as how available our target model/year was. We negotiated on a couple of units before hitting pay-dirt with a used dealer -- in our experience, dealers were more willing to deal than were individuals.
