Thing is.... when I first bought my RV, it had the G159 tires on it....and we promptly had a blowout. Fortunately, it was a rear inner dually, so other than the mess it left in the fender well there was no wreck and no injury. Fast forward...we replaced them all with G647s, and less than 40 days later another blowout due to a faulty tire....date codes were about 6 months old when it happened....tread just peeled off the tire and destroyed everything in the fender well including gas filler neck, wiring and both exhaust pipes (engine and genset) which had just been replaced from the previous blowout. My insurance subrogated against Goodyear and the claim was paid once they received the tire carcass for analyzing.
I know there are probably hundreds of thousands of tires manufactured each year and out of them, only a small percentage fail regardless of how we abuse them. But if there is a known safety issue, why not own up to it and recall and/or fix the problem? Sure it costs money now, but how much will you make in the future by making things right and maintaining customer confidence?
