GPS Navigation

Led astray numerous times by our current GPS navigator. Replace every couple of years. Time for another. Cabela's has the Garmin nuvi 2557LMT for $129.99. The Garmin nuvi 65LM for 119.99. The Garmin 55LM for $89.99. Looked at the Garmin website and see numerous models (our current model is from a different manufacturer BTW). Which would you recommend and why?

  • `Led astray'? If you read this forum enough you will find all of us have been led astray on occasion. I'm not as sure it is a lack of updates or the GPS didn't lock on the available satellites good enough OR there were not three satellites in that particular location. Also not so sure a new one would be any better.
We like our Garmin `dezl 760LMT' as discussed in this Forum.
Our old Garmin had so little memory that I could no longer update the maps for entire USA so I got a new one.

Gary - this is the result of not getting updates. I was surprise how much data comes down when I update my TomTom - so much that I try to not do it on my hotspot.
  • Garmin updates the maps three to four times a year. Even with these frequent updates the maps are still about a year behind and even longer for places such as restaurants or stores. However, these updates are much better than never updating.

As far as live traffic with the standard Garmin traffic it is available only in the major metropolitan areas. The traffic does cover most of these areas in the US. In my opinion the traffic is usually accurate.

I am on my third Garmin in the past ten years to include a free unit Garmin sent to me at no cost when my original model could no longer be supported by their "Lifetime" maps program. I would not even look at other GPS brands.
  • I would go with the 2557LMT also. Map updates are expensive and within two years a map update is always necessary. The traffic feature comes in handy around big cities.

We have the 2557LMT or its brother (with the portable friction mount) and it has been the best GPS we have had. We have added lists of our own custom POIs (all US campgrounds, Dunkin Donuts, off road trails, best BBQ restaurants, etc.) from POI Factory.
  • I also support getting one with the lifetime updates. Any Garmin should do a good job. I personally like the RV specific Garmin.
  • I wouldn't have a GPS with out lifetime maps & traffic.

But the have to be updated, I connect my Tom Tom to my computer before every camping trip.
  • The 2557 LMT means Lifetime updates for the maps, and Traffic updates too.

So if you are going to a strange town, it will be handy to have traffic ahead of you. I have a 6" screen Garmin with LMT and use it daily going to and from work. It displays where the traffic is heavy, and when I need to get off the freeway to avoid it. . .

It is also very helpful when getting off the freeway in finding new ways to get home. I can go down a empty side street, and it will update, showing the shortest way home from there.

I also enjoyed my DeLorme Topo program. I also bought the USB GPS receiver, and it plugs into my laptop, so I could plan routes several ways, and check the elevation changes with different routes.

Check the screen sizes, and go with what you need.

Check out this 6" refurbished unit. $120 from Amazon.com

They have great prices on several units. Larger display is very important when in a RV, and you need to see it at a further distance than a car windshield, that is much closer to your face.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
