Grand Teton National Park

Gros Ventre is a good location for bypassing Jackson if you are going to Teton Village/Jackson Hole ski area as there is a back road opposite to the access from the main highway. We used it today to go paragliding there and probably again this evening to go to the Bar J Chuckwagon dinner/show.

Thanks again for all the info. Gros Ventre sounds like a good choice. We haven't made a firm itinerary yet, but I'm hoping to do so this weekend. Being retired is tiring....:B..especially with a now 2 month old granddaughter...:W:W...Dennis

Gros Ventre campground in the park is our favorite place. Semi-open nice view of the mountains and close to hiking and the town of Jackson.

I'm a little surprised that we got an electric site at Gros Ventre CG today... $39 with the old farts pass. You are not jammed in like at private parks plus plenty of Cottonwood trees... not so many that you cannot get sat TV.
No smoke although a cold front late Friday could blow it this way. Lows in the 30's Sat and Sun.

Dennis. this is a no reservation big CG with a dump/water station at the entrance. We normally stay at a USFS CG near Moran ($6) but this time we are doing some things closer to Jackson. By mid Sept you will not need AC/electric so no need for a FHU CG.

Maybe take a look at Gros Ventre, which is at the southern entrance to Grand Teton? We drove through it (didn't camp) and it looked fine. Plus, you're close to Jackson if you want to do anything in town (like the rodeo, for example).

BTW - Grand Teton is my favorite place.

Sounds like you might be smelling a little smoke in the area if the winds are blowing in your direction. No biggie unless it's constant!

X2 There is not much to choose from in this area, but Coulter Bay is by far the best around. 800-628-9988. This park stays full so you may not be able to get in on this short of a notice but it's worth a try.

Email from friends this am. Hi from Gros Ventre campground! Just arrived here this afternoon - nice BIG campground. Both Justices & us took electric sites - pretty hot here today. We are staying here thru the weekend and leaving on Monday. May meet David and Jackie at Cheyenne if the timing works. I am looking for a place to stay for a night or two - any advice? I see there is a state park near which is a possibility.
We were to stay at Headwaters at Flagg ranch but the fire took out poles/ wires so they evacuated the whole Headwaters campus - they are closed for the season now. We got the call 3 days before that our reservations were cancelled. The south entrance in Yellowstone was closed for about a week - driving thru today we could see lots of fire damage on either side of the road. Lots of fires around Yellowstone at the moment - some very close to the road & actually up to the road just a few miles east of West Yellowstone. Smoke was very thick in the mornings. The campground here is fairly full - probably folks who were to stay at Headwaters.
Since we have cell and internet coverage we all may look to see if there is a cache or two nearby. It will be nice to have a day or so to just relax after checking out the Tetons. Won’t take as long at Yellowstone for sure. Going into Jackson for laundry duty and a few groceries in a day or so and to just snoop around the town without leaving too much money there!!

Its quite a haul from the Grizzly down to the tetons. If you were doing it for a one day trip...Id say OK...but for repeats...BOOO!!!
Stay at the Virginian when you are in Jackson...and at the Grizzly when up north. Its TIGHT parking at the Virginian...but you can do it

Thanks, everyone for the quick replies. We stayed at Grizzly when we visited Yellowstone but never got down to the Tetons which is why we're looking at them this year. Traveling thru Yellowstone to Jackson seemed like a long trip but we were focused on Yellowstone so I didn't pay much attention to any of the mileage. We only had two weeks at Yellowstone and spent every bit of that time hiking, riding and taking pics of the animals. Beautiful place. Thanks again and I certainly appreciate any updates on the fire situation. Fire, and the accompanying smoke are really bad, no matter where it's at.....Dennis
